 Linda's Corner

For two years we have been waiting for THEBBQGUY.COM COOKING TEAM to be called for one of the first two overall spots at a cook-off. Well two weekends ago it happened at the Cabela’s Cook-off in Dundee Michigan where Brian received the Reserve Grand Champion. So you would have thought I would have rushed home to celebrate my husband’s great accomplishment with a Linda’s Page that would beat out all others.

Well, instead I ran home helped to unpack and clean the trailer then jumped right into preparing for my parents to arrive for a visit. Some of you can only imagine what my house looked like. We really haven’t had time to bask in the glory of the win. I did extend my one week trophy on the mantle rule to two weeks. He had so many this time it just didn’t seem fair. So if you ask my parents about what style of decorating we have in the family room, I am sure they would say “Neo-Modern BBQ”.

Brian came to me tonight and said “Aren’t you going to do an update on your page?” I felt so bad. So here I am to let the world know how it went.

On my I forgot list was HONEY. So we had to buy a little commercial honey which hurts us because we swear by my nephew Gus’s pure organic clover honey. Luckily we had prepared most of our sauces that use this ingredient so we weren’t doomed to failure. Gus if you are reading this, Uncle BBQ Guy swears it is my fault he got a 12th in pork because we used grocery store honey!!! That is why he was preordering from you tonight.

The Cabela’s cook-off was wonderful because of several things. First it is only 45 minutes from home. Second it was on a beautiful weekend. Third of course was because we placed so well. Did I say it was refreshing to get home before dark on a Saturday after a cookoff? All these overshadowed the negatives. We, or should I say The BBQ Guy, had to haul water. Now the organizers were great on Friday to come with their golf carts, but on Saturday I think they got a little busy and forgot about teams needing water. Thanks to “Pork of the North” for letting Brian use the hand truck. There is something odd about not having water on site at a contest where people cook, since cooking usually brings dirty dishes and utensils. Looks like we have another one coming up next month with no water. This time we are packing a lot of water but also taking our hand truck to save on Brian’s back. Wow, I think that was the only negative. I am not going to think on it too much because we human beings can usually come up with more negatives than positives and I like the positives to win.

I have to say that Michiganders are a little more reserved when their name is announced as winners. I felt like I yelled and whooped when they said our team name compared to the rest. Maybe they haven’t been waiting and obsessing like Brian. My mom and dad informed me that I like to BBQ too. Guess I can’t hide it. I don’t like the cooking, I don’t like the cleaning, I don’t like the sleeping in the trailer and looking like death in front of strangers, I don’t like Port-a-Potties, but I DO like people (can you believe that!!). There is always someone to talk to, which generally gets me in trouble with the head Qu’er. I am trying to learn to control my socializing to non-important BBQing moments.

Wives hear me loud and clear…encourage your man to buy a grill--GAS or CHARCOAL. Let him experiment; let him give you grocery lists. Why, you might ask? Because every minute he cooks, is a minute you don’t stand in the kitchen. This does come with a WARNING: A man with a grill might become addicted to the smell of smoke and fire and become a man with a little smoker. When that little smoker won’t hold all the meat he wants to cook, a bigger smoker will appear. When he cooks too much meat for the family to eat the male will then look for ways to rationalize the purchasing of said meat. With the World Wide Web the man finds the BBQ FORUM and soon after the BBQ Contest. At this point the woman either has to yard sale the BBQ equipment when the man is away, or jumps on the band wagon. We all know what I did.

HAPPY SUMMER!!! Michigan in the summer is a great place to visit. (GET THE HINT!!!)
