Linda's Corner
You’ve got to love a BBQ cook-off that is only 40 minutes away from home. We got home in time to shower and go out to eat at the most non-BBQ restaurant that is close to our house--Taco Bell. Where we were served by a “Food Champion”. When I asked what he had to do to become a food champion (I thought since my husband aspires to be one we might learn something) the response was a roll of the eyes and a “you just have to work here”. Brian didn’t seem to be enthused with that idea. The server also asked if we had our own business and if we were hiring. I guess he doesn’t like his job much. Brian quickly told him “Yes, a BBQ rub business”. Now, call me silly but since I am his only employee and my BBQ salary is (I know you should never discuss salary, but...) ZERO I was holding my breath until Brian said we were not hiring. Our Food Champion got sent home before we even made it through our meal and now that I think of it that might not have been a good sign.
Boy did I get off track, sorry. BBQ fatigue has set in and now as I try to write something halfway amusing I find my mind wandering.
This week’s contest at Cabela’s was a great success. We managed to make it through the entire contest without an argument. Usually this means The BBQ Guy Cooking Team does not get its name called, but not this time. The ream took home first place in brisket using The BBQ Guy’s Southern BBQ Rub and tenth in chicken using Noah’s Fork Apiary Honey, which spurred us to a Top 10 finish overall.
Even though there was no arguing there were a few BBQ Trials and Tribulations. The fifteenth rib finish was blamed on me forgetting the grape juice and only having time to run into Cabela’s and purchase the closest thing which was cranberry/grape juice. I guess I was lucky they serve breakfast. I am sure, even though it was not said, that the dismal twenty-fourth in pork was of course my fault for not pulling the stuff in the appropriate manner and that our lettuce was wilted (let’s not mention that I bought 8 heads of leaf lettuce and traveled to two stores to get it). I also got stressed over the new chicken cooking method. The chief cook trying it out at a competition after only two trial runs scared me to death, but apparently it was an improvement since he finished tenth. Let me not forget that it looks like a mosquito crawled up the side of my face while I was sleeping sipping my sweet blood. How in the world I slept through it I don’t know, but Brian says I can put my head on a rock and sleep.
The BBQ Guy Cooking Team had several visitors from TheBBQGuy.com and Brian’s bbq blog. A young couple stopped by on Friday to talk a little BBQ and The BBQ Guy thought I was a little discouraging to the female of the couple. If you are out there reading, I am a very sarcastic kind of person, so don’t take it too literally. It is all what you make it and the way I make it fun is making fun of it. If you are the male portion of that couple SORRY--and if you need me to talk the BBQ habit up a bit I will do my darndest, bring her to Grand Rapids. Thanks to John and Kay for the picture of our first place win. I look so happy. It could be from either knowing I could go home soon, or that the man just handed me a big check!!! Brian already has the picture on his blog and hopes to get it on the website soon.
We had great BBQ neighbors, Great Lakes BBQ & Feed Company, Motley Que Crew, and All Day Smoke. Ford of Great Lakes BBQ & Feed Company always makes me jealous with his Land Yacht, but it also makes me aspire to a higher BBQ Budget. Brian loved the music of Motley Que Crew and they also proved that it is my directions that cause Brian problems when backing the trailer!!! All Day Smoke is a team we met about a year ago and boy do they have an outfit now. You guys sure move quicker than us--it took 3 years and a 400 lb cooker and a promotion for the BBQ Guy Team to get our trailer!!!
We are excited that we have another contest next week and the trailer is packed and ready to go. It has been 2 years since our days in Florida were it was common to go to back to back cook off’s. I hope we have the stamina. It is a calming thought to know that we only have to buy meat and snacks and we can head to Grand Rapids on Friday morning. This is the contest with no electricity and no water at each cook site, which always has its own challenges so I am sure that next week’s BBQ Tales will be more entertaining.
Brian just came in telling me about a BBQer who quit his day job got a sponsor and is going on the BBQ circuit fulltime. He had gleam in his eyes that I can not describe. I am hoping that the guy’s sponsorship is huge, or that his wife has a high paying job. So if you guys now of anyone who wants to buy us a big RV, pay a bunch in gas and entry fees, and health insurance--send them our way and then we could come and visit all of you at a contest nearby !!!
We hope you are all spending your summer days outside cooking some BBQ or at least grilling. If you have a good recipe send it our way. Take care and happy Queing!!!
