Linda's Corner
After 5 months of thinking about our first cook off we have it under our belts. I have to say that with the busy week that we had prior to the cook off I was surprised that we made it to Carmel. With the BBQ Guy’s attention on WORK, SCHOOL, COOKING BBQ for our nephew’s graduation and a Colonscopy and mine on WORK, packing the BBQ Mobile, a leaking roof, playing nurse, and a potential fire in the house I was sure that we would never make it to Carmel. The fire thing has you all panicked, now doesn’t it??
Never in the 5 years that we have competed has Brian been so nonchalant about the packing and organization for the trip. The more relaxed he got the more uptight I got it. He studied I packed, he worked I dealt with the roof repair, he had a colonoscopy, I became his chauffeur, he went to class while I sat in the Explorer ( I can’t lie I also went to Kentucky Fried Chicken, but The BBQ Guy needs to lower his cholesterol so I had to take my chance to cheat).
Thursday came and I was a wreck. It seemed that everything slowed us down. Brian worked late and had the trailer key with him, so I couldn’t begin to pack the meat. When I knew he was almost home I ran and picked up the ice, which of course I didn’t buy enough of, to pack the meat for the trip. After watching the hands on the clock tick by finally the trailer was ready to lock.
I said we needed to take one last look in the house to make sure we had everything. As I ran upstairs to pick up a pillow (which by the way never made it to the truck) I could see smoke and a smoke smell hovering at the ceiling. I yelled (the one and only time the whole trip) for Brian and hastily grabbed the phone. He calmly turned off the light and the smoke seemed to slowly disappear. I make Brian peek and then crawl up in the attic to check for fire, smoke, or heat. After about an hour and with the electricity turned off we decided to head out for Carmel. I sat there in the Explorer thinking we were the dumbest people in the world to leave our house alone. The BBQ Guy mom said that the good Lord had delayed us so as to catch the faulty light fixture. I guess she was right.
After a rainy drive on Thursday night we woke up to sun on Friday and headed toward Carmel. The cook off location change had us a bit baffled as to how to get there with certain roads shut off to traffic. I could see the beautiful AirStream RV of Great Lakes BBQ and Feed Company (now we know it was actually stuck) in a field so we knew we were close.
Finally, after several detours we made it to the large field we called home for the next 2 days. It had rained 10 days straight, so the ground was a bit soft. Brian deftly made it to our location without spinning the tires or getting stuck. We had a full days’ entertainment watching cookers and campers make beelines to their sights with their fingers crossed that they wouldn’t end up like the beautiful AirStream RV. I guess this is the first time I was ever glad that I didn’t have one of those HEAVY luxury rolling bbq mobiles.
We were lucky to have an actual team this time. The BBQ Mom, The BBQ Dad, and The BBQ Dog (this is not a misprint) came in from Missouri to give us a hand. Thank heavens we had our trailer designer available to sort out the issue of why we couldn’t get water into the trailer. I can guarantee you that without him we would have just hand carried water into our beautiful new sinks. The sinks by the way were a wonderful addition to the BBQ Trailer. Although I used them some, it seemed like the BBQ Mom had her hands (literally) in them more than me. Guess I don’t get daughter in law of the year for making her wash dishes, no...WAIT... I am the only daughter-in- law, so I guess I don’t have to worry.
The BBQ Dog pretty much stayed in his cage and occasionally let out a bark or growl when a fellow canine came around. I believe I did see him chewing on one of the BBQ Guy’s delicious top 5 ribs. Brian says he wants his mom there all the time because I am nicer when she’s around, can you believe that? We decided she had a calming affect on both of us.
We enjoyed being parked next Steve, Linda and Family of “ZZ Que” Congratulations on their good showing in chicken.
It looks like we have a month off before Cabela’s Cookoff in Dundee, MI. Brian will be through with his night class, so I can once again take the back seat approach to BBQ Cooking.
