 Linda's Corner

Who would have thought that I was on the cutting edge two years ago when I started writing “Linda’s Page”? The BBQ Guy has just informed me that I had my own BLOG before BLOGGING was the rage. That is kind of like being “Country When Country wasn’t Cool”. The mere fact that I know that song to quote from tells me that maybe I wouldn’t be described as on the “cutting edge”.

Over Christmas we received all kinds of letters from family and friends about how and what they were up to in 2005. Brian asked why I didn’t do such a letter and I laughed. Since all our family and friends know exactly what we did last year by my updates. I tried to explain to him in a kind way that hearing of our BBQ escapades once a year was enough and that a recap isn’t necessary. Sometimes he forgets that the rest of the world does not EAT, DRINK, and SLEEP BBQ!!

Between the Holidays and our schedules “The BBQ Guy” has been away from his cookers. I now find him planning the next few months with weekends filled with BBQ practice. He is meticulous in the plan. The first entry fee is in the mail (Carmel, Indiana in May) and the days have been taken off from work. It looks like the 2006 BBQ season has begun. It might be awhile before we load up the trailer for the trip, but from now until April I see my weekend activities being planned around what and when the chef plans on cooking.

I have warned my boss that the inflow of BBQ is on the way. Unfortunately, this year she is on a low carb diet, so the BBQ sauces will be a NO NO for her. The BBQ Guy has promised a special low carb sauce for her. Luckily for me, our mothers helped us get started (with Cabela’s Gift Cards) on the purchase of a Food Saver vacuum sealer. This way I will not feel obligated to stuff BBQ on my plate after each practice and will avoid the feeling of waste because I don’t have to throw away the extra.

Since the BBQ Competition Bug bit Brian about four years ago, each year we have had one major bbq purchase. The first two years it was new cookers and last year it was our lovely trailer. Did you notice the “our” in that sentence? I guess that means that finally I am taking ownership of this hobby. The BBQ Guy says that means more money for practice meat. The butcher will love to hear that. I will spend the next few months stocking up on many of the things we use regularly. For those starter teams, it does help to get a lot of standard items a little at a time. It helps prevent a stretched budget when the season kicks into gear and also it is relieves stress to know you are already stocked with the essential items. We preordered the “special” clover honey from Noah’s Fork Apiary and Brian is making his list of other items he needs to order in bulk.

On a non-bbq note ( we do have other things going on in our life besides the cooking), this week the ever so handy BBQ Guy with his assistant put together a new desk for the office. Now those of you who know us well know we are not fix it kind of folks. You can only imagine how our pride for the beautiful cherry desk we had created turned into sadness with the realization that we had put a shelf in upside down, so instead of the beauty of the cherry stain we see the raw underside of the shelf. Let’s take a poll, how many of you out there think that we tore the desk apart to fix the shelf, or do you think we left it to make it a conversation piece in the new office? I figure for most of you the answer will be obvious. Lucky for me, Brian picked this desk out, so there could be no looks of dismay at my interpretation of the directions and the many pieces and screws that fell out of the box. There really is something to say for keeping your mouth shut in the store.

Today we visited the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in downtown Detroit. The new picture at the start of the page is me in my dream VOLVO XC90. As Brian told another bystander, he can pull this out every time I ask if I can have one. Like that is going to satisfy me... But as the man told Brian, “remind her how much the car payment would be and she will be happy with the picture”. Plus, try as I might I can’t convince him that the Volvo will pull the beloved “Mobile BBQ Palace”.

I hope everyone’s New Year is starting off wonderfully. Stay in touch and let us know how your year goes. You don’t have to wait until December 2006.
