 Linda's Corner

Here it is Thursday night before the Nelsonville, OHIO Cook-off. What am I doing? Frantically finding lettuce, buying ice and triple checking my checklist to make sure everything is packed in the trailer? Am I gearing up for the argument that will happen between the dishwasher and the cook about some trivial things ranging from spilling Dr. Pepper to how to back into the cooksite? Unfortunately, not this weekend.

The BBQ Guy’s intention when we started our 2005 season was to be heading to OHIO for our last cook-off of the season. I had even resigned myself to a chilly night in the trailer. Little did we know our season ended in August, two months earlier than we planned. With the increased price of gas in September we cancelled a much anticipated trip to Kansas City to the Cabela’s National Championship. We couldn’t rationalize spending that kind of money on gas and hotel. We knew there was still Nelsonville in October. The gas prices started to break and The BBQ Guy was ready to lick the envelope on the entry fee, when a trip to the dentist and a large bill on the horizon caused the check to get ripped up.

Now The BBQ Guy sits in his recliner just looking at the National Barbecue News trying to make plans for the cook-off schedule in 2006. There is nothing sadder than a BBQ cook who can’t compete. He just didn’t get enough cooking in this summer. Do they ever get enough?

Brian is a thinker and a planner and here are a few things on his mind besides the schedule. He is planning on how to get the trailer to Missouri to get that sink put in before the first 2006 contest. The thought that I might actually have hot water next season brightens my day. There is the strategizing on what categories we need to concentrate on for practice in the winter months. He informs me that he just hasn’t cooked enough. So I look forward to more crazy pictures of “Smokin in the Snow”. He is coming up with new marketing ideas for The BBQ Guy’s Original Spice Rub as well packaging a new rub for beef. It never ends in my house, and when one issue is resolved another pops up on the list to research.

It will be a hard weekend to keep the head chef in a good mood while he knows his fellow Quers are out there smoking up the sky. Cooking for one (ME) just doesn’t always do the same thing as the thrill of competition. Luckily, we have next Saturday to look forward too. The BBQ Guy has agreed to supply pulled pork and brisket at a monthly poker game. This too has created some think time as to how he plans to cook it and if he wants to try out his new sauce recipe on them. I like him to try things out on other people, that way my taste buds aren’t called into question.

Let us know what contests you recommend for 2006 while we are still in the planning stage. Remember, we are in Michigan and mileage is a BIG factor.

Happy Halloween....Hey that makes me wonder if anyone has ever smoked a pumpkin...Let me know???
